Elizabeth Gausden, MD

Dr. Elizabeth Gausden is an Assistant Attending Orthopedic Surgeon specializing in hip and knee musculoskeletal care, including primary and revision hip and knee replacement. Her clinical expertise is in adult lower extremity reconstructive surgery and orthopedic trauma. She performs both anterior and posterior approaches to the hip and utilizes computer navigation and robotic surgery.

A Wisconsin native, Dr. Gausden completed her undergraduate studies at the University of Wisconsin, graduating with distinction. She then attended Weill Cornell Medical College, where she was elected to the prestigious Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society. She completed her orthopedic surgery residency at the Hospital for Special Surgery where she received the Jean McDaniel Award from her colleagues in recognition for her patient care and teaching. During her orthopedic surgery residency training, Dr. Gausden also earned a Master of Public Health degree from Harvard University.

Following residency, Dr. Gausden completed two fellowships: hip and knee arthroplasty at the Mayo Clinic and orthopedic trauma surgery at the University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston, the nation's busiest orthopedic trauma center. This dual training has afforded Dr. Gausden with a unique expertise in periprosthetic fractures, post-traumatic arthritis, and post-traumatic deformities of the hip and knee.

Dr. Gausden believes in individualized patient care, and seeks to improve patient outcomes through research. Her award-winning research focuses on improving outcomes following periprosthetic fractures. She is the author of over 50 journal articles, numerous book chapters, and has been invited to present her research internationally.

Hayden Newman, PA-C

Hayden Newman, PA-C, is a board-certified Physician Assistant who began her career as a PA with the Hospital for Special Surgery in 2019. She has been working alongside Dr. Gausden as her private PA since August 2021, both in the office and in the operating room. 

 

Originally from Atlanta, Georgia, Hayden received her Bachelor of Science from Wake Forest University, where she graduated cum laude with a degree in Health and Exercise Science and minors in Theatre and Psychology. She then earned her Master of Science and Physician Assistant Studies from Augusta University, where she was the recipient of the AU Service Award for her volunteer work on campus. Hayden has worked with various orthopedic surgeons at HSS during her time as a core PA, and she is now a proud member of Dr. Gausden’s team.

Samantha Taylor

Samantha has been a member of the Hospital for Special Surgery family since 2011. Prior to her role with Dr. Elizabeth Gausden she worked as practice manager for Dr. Mark Figgie. Her dedication to patient experience has made her a vital part of the HSS family, being able to put patients coming in for surgery at ease with compassion and professionalism.

 

Samantha obtained her bachelor’s degree from Le Moyne College in Syracuse, NY, majoring in Business Marketing. Originally growing up in Woodstock, NY, Samantha has spent most of her life living in NYC but escapes back to her family home in the Catskills whenever possible. She enjoys hiking, golfing and cooking in her off time but most weekends takes her pug-boston terrier mix Lulu on spontaneous adventures

Kenya Shelton

Kenya joined Dr. Gausden’s team in 2022 as medical secretary. She has become an integral part of the team, helping patients along the way from their first appointments through their surgical recovery.
